Sue Dove is artist, teacher, curator; she paints, stitches, weaves and prints; she is head of HND Textile Fine Art at Cornwall College and runs ‘Art for Health’ and ‘Alternative Doll’ workshops. Her energy and crative zeal is breath taking! Starting out as a weaver, she graduated from Liverpool School of Art in 1974, after travels in Cornwall, Morocco and ten years living in Australia she settled back in Cornwall in the mid-nineties. A career in teaching developed alongside her artwork and she now teaches three days a week, passing her zeal and knowledge onto students lucky enough to find themselves under her tutelage. Preconceptions of enjoying a leisurely craft are left at the door and students enter a world of high expectation; developing their work under instruction that demands artistry, imagination and critical awareness. Sue has long struggled with the ‘Craft’ association. “The art world has a prejudice against textiles due to association of craft and gender. But that is slowly changing with work by high profile artists such as Tracy Emin and Grayson Perry using mediums associated with ‘craft’ to make their art”
Sue is compulsive about what she does, a day rarely goes by when she is not sketching or making something. Versatile and eclectic, there is a quality to the work that is utterly enchanting.
