Emerging from their colourful abstracted backgrounds, Emma Cameron’s classical and timeless figures seem to flow out of the ether. “I start with a blank canvas and no plans,” she says. “I begin completely at random, then my swishes and swirls of paint start to take on a form, and when I look into it, I see the outline of a human or animal figure.” Although Emma teaches life drawing, she does not use drawing as the basis for her paintings, “I don’t really want their energy and immediacy dissipated by any other medium. I want to keep them elusive and mysterious, not to be illustrative or literal in any sense.”
